What Recent Genesis Scottish Open Winners' Games Looked Like Going In

The Renaissance Club's last four completed champions before this summer are a usefully varied set: Xander Schauffele (2022, −7), Rory McIlroy (2023, −15), Robert MacIntyre (2024, −18) and Chris Gotterup (2025, −15). Winners and scores verified against DP World Tour / PGA Tour records. Tom Kim added his name in July 2026, winning at −17 with a bogey-free closing 64 — his arrival profile joins this dataset once our round archive fully covers the season.

Source basis, stated plainly: our round archive covers 2022 through early May 2026, with thin patches in 2023 and 2024. Where our data covers a season fully, the numbers below are ours (strokes gained per round). Where it doesn't, we say so rather than guess.

The arrival profiles

Schauffele, 2022 — the hottest arrival of the four. Across his previous 18 measured rounds he averaged +2.37 SG total: +0.50 off the tee, +0.82 approach, +0.24 around the green, +0.81 putting (our archive). Elite in every category, no weakness to hide — and he still only won at −7 in a brutal wind week. Lesson: when scoring is hard, the complete profile wins.

McIlroy, 2023 — our archive is thin for the 2023 season, so no honest in-house number exists for his run-in. What the record does show: he arrived as a perennial top-three driver on tour and won at −15.

MacIntyre, 2024 — archive coverage of 2024 is sparse. A 4-round sample shows +2.00 SG total (+0.80 off the tee, +0.51 approach, +0.70 putting) — too small to lean on, and flagged as such. What the record shows: he won at −18, the lowest of the four winning scores.

Gotterup, 2025 — the most instructive one, and fully covered by our archive. Over his 8 measured rounds going in he averaged +1.34 SG total: +0.71 off the tee, +0.65 approach — and −0.13 putting. He arrived losing strokes on the greens. Then in the winning week itself he putted +1.83 per round (with +1.09 off the tee and +0.74 around the green, +3.84 total). The ball-striking was predictable; the putting week was not.

What the winning weeks demanded

Putting was worth roughly double any other category among those who contended. Gotterup's own week was even more lopsided: putting and driving first, irons merely adequate.

The takeaway

Across the recent winners we can measure, the pattern is: arrive striking it well — off the tee especially — and let the Renaissance greens decide the rest. Schauffele arrived hot everywhere; Gotterup arrived hot tee-to-green with a cold putter and found the putting week on site. Nobody putts their way to this title without the long game already in credit. If you're profiling a Renaissance Club field, weight driving and approach form as the qualification, and treat putting upside as the multiplier.
